Inmate Remains Unresponsive Following Assault Inside Stone County Jail
An inmate at the Stone County Jail remains unresponsive after a violent assault on November 12, according to a sworn probable cause affidavit filed by the Stone County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies and jail staff responded after the incident in Cell One, and the victim - whose identity has not been released - was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
Video footage described in the probable cause affidavit shows Blevins pulling the victim off the top bunk and onto the floor. Blevins then removed the victim’s mattress and property and placed them in a trash can. The victim retrieved his belongings, and the two were later seen arguing in the day room. According to the affidavit, Blevins blocked the entrance back to their shared cell. When the victim reached for the door handle, Blevins violently shoved him backward. A physical fight followed, during which Blevins struck the victim repeatedly in the face and slammed the victim’s head into a steel housing unit protruding from the wall.
The affidavit also reports that after the altercation, Blevins was given several items identified by another inmate as packets of powdered milk. A separate inmate told investigators they overheard someone offering Blevins powdered milk in exchange for beating up the victim.
Medical information included in the affidavit states that the victim suffered severe brain trauma, including a 13-millimeter brain shift, and underwent emergency surgery for a brain bleed and swelling. At the time the affidavit was submitted, the victim was described as unconscious with no reported brain activity.
Blevins has been charged with first-degree assault, a Class A felony. Bond has been denied. He was already in custody on separate charges of second-degree burglary and first-degree property damage.
The affidavit also notes that investigators interviewed multiple inmates regarding circumstances leading up to the assault. Detectives reported that tensions inside the cell had been escalating prior to the incident.
The Stone County Sheriff’s Office reports that the investigation remains ongoing. No additional information has been released.
