Stone County Ambulance District Confirms New Station Planned for Crane

Just hours after Crane.news reported on the recent construction activity on the property behind Dollar General, the Stone County Ambulance District has confirmed to Crane.news that work is officially underway on a new ambulance station in Crane.

In a press release sent to Crane.news, issued October 11, the district announced that the new facility is being built along Highway 413 between Dollar General and Westrip Funeral Home. The station will serve as a base for Mercy EMS, which provides ambulance response and transport under contract with the district.

The project is part of a lease-purchase, build-to-suit agreement with Crane EMS, LLC, the developer that purchased the 2.09-acre parcel from the Crane R-III School District in early September. The arrangement allows the newly formed district—still within its first year of collecting sales tax revenue—to move forward on essential facilities without relying on traditional financing.

“This station broke ground at the beginning of October and is scheduled to finish sometime late summer next year,” said Jeff Hawkins, Interim Director of the Stone County Ambulance District. “We are excited to get this project off the ground and completed so early into the district’s start-up.”

For now, EMS crews are being housed at a temporary leased location on the north side of Crane until the new station is completed.

The Stone County Ambulance District was established in August 2024 following voter approval earlier that year and began collecting sales tax revenue in February 2025. Its creation unified countywide ambulance coverage under a single public district, contracting Mercy EMS as its provider.

Crane.news first reported earlier today that construction activity had begun on the Crane EMS, LLC property. The district’s same-day press release now confirms that the site will become the new ambulance station serving the Crane area.
