They sound a little more like an Ozarks weekend than a collection of gourmet salts, and that is somewhat the point. TUFF Momma® Salt Craft is a family-run gourmet salt company based in Branson West, Missouri. It has grown from selling handcrafted salts face-to-face at local markets into a brand now carried in five states: Missouri, Louisiana, Montana, Oklahoma and Idaho. The company also ships nationwide.
For founder Vashon Borich-Leach, the growth is exciting, but keeping the company’s distinctly Ozarks personality matters just as much.
“We make salt, which admittedly does not sound terribly exciting,” Borich-Leach said. “But then somebody tastes Maple Bacon or Ozark Campfire, and suddenly they’re telling us what they’re going to put it on, who they need to buy it for and which flavor their husband is going to steal. Salt gets surprisingly competitive.”
Founded in 2019, TUFF Momma Salt Craft currently produces 27 gourmet culinary salts from its licensed commercial kitchen in Branson West. The salts are hand-packed in distinctive bottles with aluminum lids and tiny wooden spoons. They are sold individually, in gift collections and in handcrafted wooden racks.
What began as a local Ozarks business has steadily expanded through farmers markets, festivals, independent retailers, specialty grocers, hospitality partners and wholesale accounts.
“I love the idea that something made right here in Branson West can end up in somebody’s kitchen in Montana, Louisiana or Idaho,” Borich-Leach said. “We want to grow nationally, absolutely, but I never want people to look at TUFF Momma and wonder where we came from. The Ozarks are part of our story.”
The company’s best-selling Maple Bacon Salt comes with an unexpected twist. There is no bacon in it.
The smoky, slightly sweet seasoning contains no meat or dairy and is vegetarian, gluten-free and Alpha-Gal Friendly.
“Watching somebody realize the bacon salt doesn’t actually contain bacon never gets old,” Borich-Leach said. “Especially when they’ve already tasted it.”
Much of TUFF Momma’s growth has come through relationships with other businesses, particularly the retailers, specialty grocers and hospitality partners that have championed the brand in the Ozarks and beyond.
“Some of our greatest cheerleaders have been other businesses,” Borich-Leach said. “They put us on their shelves, tell customers about us and give a small American-made brand a chance. Every one of those partnerships matters to us.” That growth is also creating opportunities beyond the retail shelf.
TUFF Momma is expanding its corporate and hospitality gifting program, offering gourmet salt collections and handcrafted wooden racks for businesses looking for distinctive gifts for employees, clients, conference attendees, wedding guests and visitors.
The company can package gifts, ship them throughout the United States and include a business’s own card or personal message. “There are only so many coffee mugs and pens a person needs,” Borich-Leach said. “If you’re going to give somebody something, why not give them something useful, fun and with a story behind it?” While TUFF Momma continues to expand, every bottle still begins in Branson West. “We’re growing, but I don’t want us to become so polished that we stop being us,” Borich-Leach said. “We’re Ozarks-made. We’re a little rustic, a little unexpected and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. I think people respond to that.”
