Judge Peters Faces Ouster Proceedings
In September 1929, Judge O.D. Peters of Stone County was served with charges after J.B. Norman filed seven allegations against him. Sheriff Knight delivered the warrant and transcript of charges.
Three of the counts claimed that Peters failed to publish county financial statements for three straight years. Two others accused him of allowing excess tax levies, while another charged that he permitted the county clerk, James A. Hall, to withhold excess fees that should have been returned to the county.
The final allegation was that Peters approved the purchase of a poor farm at a price allegedly $2,000 too high. The ouster case was set to be heard before Judge Gideon during the October term of circuit court.
Peters issued no detailed defense but stated he was confident the people of the county knew the facts and that the charges would not be upheld in court.
